What is our spine made of ?

Our spine is made of a number of vertebral bones which are attached to each other with ligaments There is a cushion like structure called ‘Disc’ between two vertebral bones that acts as a shock absorber and provides mobility to the spinal column Spinal column houses a very important structure within the spinal canal called spinal cord, which is a link between our brain and rest of the body There are lot of muscles around the spinal column that stabilizes our back, neck and also help in our movements

What causes back / neck pain?

Any fault within the numerous structures that form the spinal column can lead to back / neck pain. Additionally, many abdominal organs when inflamed can cause referred pain in the back

It is therefore important to thoroughly investigate and ascertain the underlying reason for back or neck pain.

What is disc prolapse?

Disc is a kind of cushion between two vertebral bones. It has a soft center and an outer hard shell. If the disc ruptures, the soft inner material can come out and press the nerve leading to leg or arm pain depending on whether disc prolapse occurred in lower back or neck.

9 out of 10 patients suffering from disc prolapse get better with rest and medication. However, 1 out of 10 patients, who is unable to settle or has significant weakness in arm or leg because of disc prolapse may need surgery to remove the material pressing on the nerve.

The Centre for Joint Replacement has performed large numbers of Total Knee and Hip Replacement surgeries with results that are comparable to the best hospitals in the world. It is one of the leading centres in the country to provide Total Knee Replacement which is considered as the “gold standard” operation for Knee Osteoarthritis. Ably complimented by state-of-the-art technologies and facilities, our expert team at the centre has successfully performed numerous Total Knee Replacement Surgery procedures with excellent results. The Orthopaedic team has expertise in Revision Joint Replacement Surgery for Hip and Knee using special implants and frozen bone grafts.

Various conditions such as Knee Deformity, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Gout, Haemophilia and Bone Dysplasia cause damage to the Knee joint. To determine if Total Knee Replacement is the right treatment for the patient, our Orthopaedic surgeons assess the knee’s range of motion, stability and strength and also refer to X-ray results to help ascertain the extent of the damage. In Total Knee Replacement Surgeries, our experts cut away the damaged bone and cartilage from the thighbone, shinbone, kneecap and replace it with an artificial joint (prosthesis) made up of metal alloys, high-grade plastics and polymers.

The Centre utilises Computer Aided Navigation for pain free Joint Replacement surgery, which is especially useful in cases of severe deformity. The Centre also offers Unicondylar Knee Arthroplasty, which is done for relatively younger patients with Knee Arthritis. Shoulder and Elbow Arthroplasty as well as Arthroplasty for small joints in hand (especially in case for Rheumatoid Arthritis) are some of the key services offered to patients with an aim to improve the overall quality of life.

We at the Nanavati Centre for Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement are committed to providing world-class Total Knee Replacements for Knee Osteoarthritis patients with exemplary results.

The mainstay treatment focuses on preserving and rebuilding of the natural normal cartilage.

What is a knee joint?
Knee is a complex joint that connects thigh bone (femur) to the leg bone (tibia). In addition to that, knee cap (patella) articulates with femur.

Normally, joint surfaces are lined with very fine articular cartilage, which ensure movement with minimum friction. There are also other specialised structures inside the knee like the meniscus, which help in knee motion and act as shock absorbers.

What causes knee pain?
If for any reason the cartilage gets worn out, the surface of the joints become rough and movement may become painful.

Joint cartilage usually wears out because of the ageing process, leading to osteoarthritis. Wearing out can also be caused by different forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, post injury arthritis, etc.

How is knee pain treated?
In early stage of knee arthritis, pain can usually be controlled with weight reduction, physiotherapy and mild medication.

During end stage of arthritis, when degeneration or arthritis advances too much, there is severe decrease in joint space and consequently significant amount of pain while walking, getting up from chair, and sometimes even while resting. In such a scenario, surgery may be required to replace the knee.

What is knee replacement?
Knee replacement is a misnomer. It is better to describe it as knee resurfacing or knee arthroplasty. The procedure involves removal of worn out cartilage along with a bit of bone. Then with special tools (jigs), a shape is created to properly fit in an implant. Special bone cement is used to fix the implant to the bone.

Implants help the joint move with very low friction, almost like the original joint. They are metallic on one side and special plastic on the other. At Nanavati orthopaedics joint centre , implants from various international companies are available and only the best are used for such procedures.

What To Expect From A Knee Replacement Surgery

Joint pain is generally associated with old age. Weakening joints and regular joint pain problem is a synonym to the process of ageing. This, in fact is not true at all and people need to wake up to the new reality. As per a recent study, joint issues can hit you at any age. There are many young people who suffer from arthritis at a young age. Therefore, considering arthritis as a problem in elderlies only is a big myth.

Osteoarthritis – One of the most common forms of Arthritis

Arthritis mostly affect people in the form of osteoarthritis and is the most common form of chronic arthritis which generally occurs in older people. It starts with the breakage of cartilage, a protective tissue that covers the two bones of knees making it a joint. The breakdown of the cartilage leads to stiffness while moving and pain in the joints. It not only adds to lot of discomfort for a person suffering from it but also results in lack in physical activities.

Knee Osteoarthritis – When to consider surgery

Arthritis is generally related with knees but it can affect any joint in the body. Knee is responsible for mobile movement; therefore it is more severe and affects daily routine of a person. Even a simple movement like walking or climbing stairs, sitting or even lying down is slowed down in a person suffering from osteoarthritis.

Treatment options include physical therapy and surgery. While physical therapy gives you some relief, replacement surgeries make sure that your ailment is permanently cured.

Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacement surgery is a very common surgery in India and is considered most effective treatment in dealing with osteoarthritis. The surgical procedure involves removing the weakened part of the knee and replacing it with an artificial joint. The prosthetic perfectly gels with bones and results in pain free joints. The surgery also helps in curing diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis.

Total Knee Replacement surgery- In some cases total knee replacement surgery is recommended. In this procedure the whole knee joint is replaced with an artificial one. This is done in case of extreme knee osteoarthritis and is a very successful procedure due to latest technology and advancement in medical sciences.

What is a hip joint?
Hip is a ball-and-socket joint where thigh bone (femur) meets hip bone (pelvis). A healthy hip has layers of smooth cartilage that covers the ball-shaped end of the femur and socket part of the pelvis. Cartilage acts as a cushion and allows the ball of the femur to glide easily on the socket of the pelvis. Muscles around the joint support your weight and help move the joint smoothly so that you can walk without pain.

What is a degenerated hip joint?
When smooth cartilage layers around the ball of the femur and the pelvic socket wears down, the condition is called degeneration. It can happen because of arthritis, injury or as a side effect from medicines, such as steroids. When the joint wears down, smooth surfaces become rough. Instead of gliding smoothly with leg movement, the ball grinds in the socket causing pain and stiffness.

How is hip pain treated?
In early stage of hip arthritis, pain can be controlled with weight reduction, physiotherapy and mild medication.

During the last stage of arthritis, when degeneration or arthritis worsens, there’s a severe decrease in the joint space and significant increase in amount of pain while walking, getting up from chair, and sometimes even while resting. In such a scenario, surgery may be required to replace the hip

What is total hip replacement?
Total hip replacement is an operation that replaces the worn out or damaged hip joint. It involves replacement of both the joint socket and the head of thigh bone with a hip prosthesis (artificial joint), which is made of metal, plastic, ceramic or a combination of these materials.

What are the benefits of surgery?
Provided the patient follows post-operative precautions and works hard on his or her mobility after hip replacement operation, a significant improvement can be expected in quality of life. There is greater mobility and appreciable reduction in pain.

Prerequisites before surgery?

Patient and surgeon should make sure that patient doesn’t have any source of infection in the body, such as skin boils, dental, urine and chest infection If patient is taking blood-thinning medicines, the doctor should be informed. These medicines may have to be stopped a few days before surgery If patient has any other medical issues such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, hypothyroidism, etc., ensure that the best doctor takes appropriate measures to control the same before surgery.

It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which an examination and sometimes treatment of damage to the joint’s interior parts is performed using an arthroscope - a type of endoscope that is inserted into the joint through a small incision. Arthroscopic procedures can be performed to treat many Orthopaedic and Joint conditions including torn floating cartilage, torn surface cartilage, ACL reconstruction, and trimming damaged cartilage.

The Department also offers various other treatments such as Limb lengthening, Ortho-Oncology, Reconstructive and Salvage surgeries, and Pediatric Orthopedics
